Maroochydore
Currently ranked as the 10th largest urbanised region in Australia (2006 Census data), the
Sunshine Coast has had the fastest growth rate in the State over the five years to 2006, averaging an annual increase of 3.3%. The current population of the region is approximately 290,000 with an estimated projection approaching 500,000 by 2026.
As the designated capital of the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore has an administrative and prime retail focus accommodating regional offices of government, significant health, education, cultural and entertainment facilities as well as legal and financial services. Maroochydore has been designated by the Queensland State Government as the Key Regional Centre for the Sunshine Coast.
To cater for the growth in the region, superior transport links and community infrastructure will support Maroochydore’s status as the Principal Activity Centre contained with the South East Queensland Regional Plan. The Sunshine Coast region is served by a modern regional airport, with the Bruce highway, Sunshine Motorway and the Brisbane-Sunshine Coast rail line, providing excellent access to the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane labour markets, Brisbane International Airport and the Port of Brisbane.
Future and immediate development such as the Sunshine Cove Community, the expansion of the Sunshine Plaza, the redevelopment of the Big Top Shopping Centre, and the rapid infill of the existing CBD area will see billions of dollars invested, creating a vibrant regional centre with significant employment opportunities and long term future prosperity.
